London (21.05.17) – The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have given their approval for the conduct between 2017 and 2021 of field trials of GM-potatoes at a designated trial site at the Norwich Research Park (1). The site will not exceed 1,000 m3 in area and will need to have a 20 m buffer zone around it.

The project is directed to developing a blight- and nematode-resistant Maris Piper potato which also bruises less and produces less acrylamide when cooked at high temperatures. The project is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) with additional funding from BioPotatoes (UK) and Simplot (US).
